Rich,Thank you very much for the kind comments and also for the link they are appreciated. I hope to have the DANFS entries completed with in the next two weeks and added to my site. I am doing the destroyers now and will take a break and then add the destroyer escorts. Several of us are working to get the entire DANFS series online, Andrew Toppan is doing the biggest part and host's DANFS online. (Which has moved to the USS Salem Site Http://www.uss-salem.org) I am doing the Destroyers and Destroyer escorts and will have them on my site, Andrew will have the complete collection at his site. Several of us with Naval sites are working together to get this project done.I am an amateur (semi-pro) historian, My whole project stems from my search for the USS Yarnall DD-541 and DD-143. After I figured where to find the information I took it upon myself to provide all the information I could on every one of my personal favorite class of ships. My research has taken over 25 years and I figured that most folks do not have that long to wait to find out the info or wanted to take that much time to locate the information In the case of the W.W.II vets they for the most part do not have that much time left and very many want to know what became of their old can. It is for these men that I do this, They provided me with the history I have spent many years in study of and this is my way of giving something back to them.
Note: I had asked Paul the following question in regards to the letter (A Sailor's Letter), I wrote the article on - 8 Sep 97. (Quote from letter) It is more or less of an international settlement and the Japanese decided they wanted it, until Yarnell and Sir Percy Nobel of the Limey fleet intervened. Is the Yarnell referenced, the Admiral Yarnell who is your relative? If you have any additional information on this, I would greatly appreciate if you could pass it along to me.
Yes, This would be my cousin Admiral Harry E. Yarnell, He was thecommander of the Asiatic Fleet from 36-39 and was relieved by Adm. Hart just prior to W.W.II. I have some information about this in my collection of papers here and can draw up a little history of this for you. At the time the Japanese were getting very aggressive and Harry had a free hand to do what was best in his judgment to protect both American and foreign citizens in China. He on many occasions sent landing parties ashore and opened fire on the Japanese and Chinese troops to steer them away from the international settlements. You need to recall the situation in China at the time was crazy, with both a Invasion by the Japanese and also a full blown Civil War between the Nationalist and the Communist Chinese, No one was safe and Harry is regarded as saving the international community from slaughter. The Guided Missile Cruiser, Harry E. Yarnell, CG-17 was named in his honor.
I will put something together for you on this and send it along as I have time. Again thanks for you note and I really do appreciate your comments and link, I added a link to your site under my Awards section and changed the logo some to make it show up on my background. I also have a huge collection of photos at my site, As of now it's the largest collection of Destroyers, destroyers and frigates available. NavPhoto and I had an agreement but that has since dissolved and we are no longer sharing resources. Also there is the USS Yarnall site that I do for the Crew of the Yarnall, They have made me an honorary member, This site will be getting much bigger I have her deck logs and crew rosters on the way from the National Archives and I am going to add every thing of importance to the site and the crew are now searching through the old boxes of memorabilia for items to add including, many photos taken aboard over the years.
Again thanks and I will be in touch,
Regards,
Paul
