I served on the Clamagore (SS-343) and the Piper(SS-409), am presently working on a Clamagore home Page. Hopefully be on line within a month. The day before Christmas I was with a old China sailor who served on the S-36 and we were looking at pictures he had. Mush Morton was the first LT. on the boat. This old sailor is a survivor of the Squalus sinking, a young 84 years old. W.W.Smith Jr. Look him up in the history of the Squalus. Super Home Page, Bravo Zulu

Proud to be aboard. I served aboard USS Snook SSN-592 from Dec 1979 till Oct 1983. Would love to hear from shipmates that served on her. I was a Radioman. I still remember the poem that was on the plaque in the wardroom. Good Job, Shipmate. I retired after 22 years. I served in SKYLARK and was almost lost at sea during a hurricane while searching for SCORPION off the Azores. I served with men who were aboard SKYLARK on that fateful day when THRESHER was lost. Sad memories. God Bless All Who Serve.

Great Site, I retired 1964, after 20 years SS and enjoyed your page. For anyone interested in good post WW2 submarine operations I just finished reading " Blind Man's Bluff". by Christopher Drew. Excellent reading and true, because I was involved. I retired in Scotland, aboard the USS Etahn Allen SSBN 608, and was Senior CPO of M Div. My first boat was USS Capitaine SS 336, which I qualified on in 1947.

I am diving on the S-49 this week, it lies in 126 FSW off Point Patience, near Solomons Island, Maryland. I have been told it is still very much intact, and sits upright on the bottom, looking as if it is ready to cruise down the Patuxent River and out into the Chesapeake Bay. I found your site a useful primer on the subs physiology.

I was a Plankowner on the SS395(Redfish) and made the first two runs on her in '44. Trandferred to Relief Crew on the Proteus on Guam, then picked up the Haddoc (231) for her last two runs. Rode her back through the Canal and decommissioned her after the War. I was a TM3/c (qualified) and enjoy keeping up with Submarine news.

Rich, BZ on the site. I'm just entering the 20th century, and surfing all the CPO sites I can find. This is great. As you can see, the only place the canoe club hasn't sent me is to the boats. I tried once, buy some self-righteous shrink said I was cluastrophobic. Oh, well, I retire in six months, so I guess its too late now. Over the past 26 years I have been associated with some awesome individuals, skimmers, airdales, bees, and fortunately to round out the mix, submariners. I have this site marked, and will come back often to learn about the part of the Navy I missed. If any old shipmates out there see this, please feel free to contact me. Good luck, and keep the faith. I served aboard the USS Razorback (SS 394) circa 1964-65 as a FTG-3 without going to sub school. Would have completed my tour on that boat, but they found out I wasn't a career type and sent me back to the surface skimmers. I often wonder what happened to the COB, Kowalski, a "Tojo Chief" who was a WWII POW off the USS Grenadier, "Black Sam" Bass, and Sowders, both cooks, Dave Green, a torpedoman from Colorado, Zoro, (from "sword fighting" the SP with a pool cue.

I was assigned on the S-42 in March just after she arrived there untill she was decommissioned at Mare Island. I was a commisary man 3rd class and remember that the intelligence people caught a baracuda that had jumped on deck and we cooked it for them. One of the scouts that was not recovered was located in Brisbane several months later. We were at Brisbane for overhaul because we were rammed at dock at Bette Island by a new 90 day wonder that was showing off his lack of skills at docking. I was on the USS HEnry Clay SSBN 625Gold crew from 1972 to 1976 and rode her to the shipyard in Portsmouth New Hampshire, made 5 patrols out of Guam. After that went back to Pearl as an instructor on sub antennas at Naval sub tra cent pac. left active duty and joined reserves with Navy Special Warfare mobile comm team out of Coronado Island in San Diego. I retired in 1996.

Great sight! I love Navy websights! I am writing a series on Naval Aviation called "Wings and Things" at www.vpnavy.com/wings.html. Perhaps it will interest the shipmates. We share one ship activity as I sailed aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB-42 in 1951 as a member of VF-22, CVG-4. We had SecNav aboard and we helped form the NATO Navy that year. I was a WWII retread for the Korean deal. Perhaps all Navy websites should be crosslinked. Our webmaster is Nevins Frankel at www.vpnavy.com. I was a GM 3/c aboard the SC 1266. In 1944 we operated with (I think) the S-43 in the Solomon Islands. We were painted yellow to alert our pilots that the sub they might have seen is a "friendly". Sometimes the crew members from the SC 1266 could go aboard the S-43 for the days daily exercises. I got to go one day it was interesting and I enjoyed it. I remember one time that a P-38 pilot came aboard as laison officer to coordinate the days training exercise representing the air wing. We were underway about five minutes and this pilot got so sea-sick he was useless for the whole operation. An SC is not very stable in even calm seas. I like your page, the graphics are cool. I came across some old files and photo's that belong to my Father.(Henry J. Rybak). We never got to site down and talk about sub life one on one. He passed away in 77. This is a great site. It has brought back a lot of memories. I firat qualified on S 39 SS144 in 1940. I left her in 1942 in Java. Several of her crew including the CO James Coe are on eternal patrol. There are only two type of ships in the Navy, Submarines and Targets. I served on a Target and am looking for anyone else that served on her as well. The USS PREBLE DDG-46/DLG-15. Hi, Chief... Congratulations on the S-Boat Web site. I have thought a lot about the lack of attention paid to the S-Boats and I'm really happy that you've done something about it. I spent 10 years (1971-1981) in Design Engineering at EB in Groton (hydraulic and HP air systems) and I'm still fascinated by big black boats. And some not so big ones...I have a nice picture of my favorite, the NR-1, on my office wall. I live in Trumbull, which is just north of Bridgeport. In fact, about a mile from me, a street called Lake Avenue runs into Madison. There's no lake there, the street is named after Simon. There's a big old house across from the intersection where I understand that Mr. Lake lived during the years that the Torpedo Boat Co. was active in Bridgeport. I hang out around the harbor a bit. There is no remaining evidence of the shipyard, but I have seen some photos. I know a local history buff who has some b&w; pics of S-Boats rafted in Bridgeport harbor. I'll try to get you some scans. Great site, Chief! I saw a really nice, framed, picture of S-5 last weekend, in a bookstore, for sale. It looked like a builder's shot. It had a small plaque with "1919" on it. Also "Portsmouth, NH". Super site. Was YN2(SS) on board VON STEUBEN (SSBN 632)(GOLD) when we emergency surfaced under SS SEA LADY in the Bay of Cadiz off Rota. Sank the SEA LADY, pretty interesting morning. Went on to serve in CAVALLA (SSN 684), SILVERSIDES (SSN 679) and on Group 6 and 9 Staffs. Retired as YNCS(SS). Wear my Dolphin ring every day and still consider myself Qualified in Submarines.

Thanks for the memorial info on USS Thresher. Thirty five years ago I was a young woman.� For some reason, I have always been fascinated by sea travel and sea disasters.� I read about Titanic when a girl, Luisitania, Andria Doria, etc. and even was extremely interested in the Pueblo incident. I was fortunate to take a dependent's cruise onboard the USS Ranger in San Francisco -� and remember being so excited as we neared the Golden Gate Bridge and saw the skyline -� once while I was a civilian employee for the Dept. of� Navy and felt like I "belonged" there.� I vaguely remember going out to the tender and boarding a sub while a Navy wife in San Diego and got the same feeling. I remember vividly being a young mother when I heard the news of the Thresher, and always tried to picture the people who died on it....and what their last minutes were like.� I was wondering how they died...what happens when a submarine implodes?� How much warning did they have...when they knew they would die.� If you could describe what was happening onboard from the time the garbled transmissions to Skylark were made, it would answer questions that have haunted me for years. Thx.

Glad to come across you on April 11, 1998, Mr. Tucker, right after you had alrady changed format "on April 12, 2026" With such expertise, you are a natural leader. My duty stations were: (51-52) USS Rockwall (APA-230; (52-53) USS LSMR 411; (53-54) USS Corry (DDR-819); (54-55) ComCortDesDiv 62 staff officer embarked in USS Lloyd Thomas (DDE-762). Would be de- lighted to hear from any old shipmates. Was known mostly as "Mac".
