I enjoyed reading some of the comments in your log. I was in the Pacific during WW2 on a heavy Cruiser and 2 Troop Transports. I was recalled to Submarine Service for the Korean War. Being an old Navy Vet I love browseing in youw site. Its great and I congrateulate on a job WELL DONE SAILOR.

I am in the process of reading, "The Terrible Hours" and was looking for some info on the S boats. I was a reservist attached to a submarine reserve unit in Long Beach, CA from 2/70 to 2/71. We used the USS Roncador SS301 for training on weekends. I spent July and August of 1970 at Sub School and went active in 2/71. I served on board the "USS Henry Clay SSBN 625 Gold". I made 3 patrols out of Guam and was seperated 12/72. The reserve unit was disbanded at some time while I was on active duty and the Roncador was towed to the Redondo Beach Pier where it was a tourist attraction for some time. I have recently discovered that the Roncador conn with periscope and antennae masts is now a memorial at Ballast Point in San Diego. Some web sites I have recently visited which are very good are www.ussnautilus.org, The USS Henry Clay has a very good web site.

Great site! I got interested in S boats reading Peter Maas' book The Terrible Hours. A friend of my father's was in the Navy at the time of the Squalus accident and was one of the divers who assisted in the rescue/salvage operation. He became so fascinated with subs he transferred to submarines. He came back to Detroit on leave during the war and told my dad hair-raising stories of being depth charged by the Japanese for 12 hours. On his last leave he told my father he

My dad's brother served in WW-II on the USS Canopus, AS-9. I have researched his service and CANOPUS' service at Bataan. After the scuttling of Canopus the crew was taken out to Corregidor for beach defenses. After capture, to Bilibid Prison in Manila, then many but not all were taken via hell ships to Japan and China. Dad's brother went to Yodogawa POW camp in Osaka, then died in Ichioka Prisoner Hospital in Osaka, then cremated by Japanese and stored in Juganji Buddhist temple till war's end. Very interesting paper trail. I have lots of photos of Canopus, the surrender at Corregidor, Yodogawa, Ichioka and the Juganji Bhuddist Temple.

My grandfather, John Raymond Moore, was the Caption of the S-44 in May 1942. He wrote about his WWII experiences and he wrote about sinking the Kako. Some of his accounts diff. from the Subnet.com Anyway, I have scanneed many picture of his from the war. I am an ex-surface sailor, RM2, served from 1978-1987. I really enjoy your S-Boat site. One comment: there is a good internal diagram of a pigboat in the book "Pigboat 39" (which I happen to be reading at this time), which is much better than the graphic currently on your site. I do have one question, however: what was the normal complement of an S-Boat, broken down by ratings (how many MM's, TM's, etc.)? I have found such information regarding fleet boats and U-Boats, but would appreciate similar info for pigboats for comparison.

What an outstanding site. My simple thank you seems somehow insufficient, but I assure you it is heartfelt. I Served Two separate active duty stints, 1964 to 1968 ( I was one of those 20 year old "know it alls" Who ran off the brow screaming USN NEVER AGAIN) and 1984 to 1994. Chief, You have a great web site. I served from 1960 to 1974. First boat was USS Argonaut SS-475, then on to USS Lafayette SSBN-616 (Plank owner)Went into WO program and retired out a Lt (LDO). Most importantly we have 4 submariners in our Legion Post in Phelps, NY and one of them served on S-15 for one patrol. He also made war patrols on Medregal and Icefish. His name is Bud Meath. We found out he has lost his War Patrol pin so we decided to present him with a replacement at a small ceremony at the post. I produce a monthly publication of historical notes for the San Francisco Commandery of the Naval Order of the United States. I would like to write about 1,000 words about Chaplain Howell M. Forgy who was aboard USS New Orleans on 7 Dec 41. It was he who uttered the famous phrase: Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition, but I have no information about the event. If I can learn anything, the story will appear in the issue for December, which will be published on 6 December. Honoring the American Flag -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Condensed from a speech by Leo K. Thorsness, recipient of The Congressional Medal of Honor. "You've probably seen the bumper sticker somewhere along the road. It depicts an American Flag, accompanied by the words "These colors don't run." I'm always glad to see this, because it reminds me of an incident from my confinement in North Vietnam at the Hao Lo POW Camp, or the "Hanoi Hilton," as it became known. Then a Major in the U.S. Air Force, I had been captured and imprisoned from 1967-1973. Our treatment had been frequently brutal. After three years, however, the beatings and torture became less frequent. During the last year, we were allowed outside most days for a couple of minutes to bathe. We showered by drawing water from a concrete tank with a homemade bucket. One day as we all stood by the tank, stripped of our clothes, a young Naval pilot named Mike Christian found the remnants of a handkerchief in a gutter that ran under the prison wall. Mike managed to sneak the grimy rag into our cell and began fashioning it into a flag. Over time we all loaned him a little soap, and he spent days cleaning the material. We helped by scrounging and stealing bits and pieces of anything he could use. At night, under his mosquito net, Mike worked on the flag. He made red and blue from ground-up roof tiles and tiny amounts of ink and painted the colors onto the cloth with watery rice glue. Using thread from his own blanket and a homemade bamboo needle, he sewed on the stars. Early in the morning a few days later, when the guards were not alert, he whispered loudly from the back of our cell, "Hey gang, look here." He proudly held up this tattered piece of cloth, waving it as if in a breeze. If you used your imagination, you could tell it was supposed to be an American flag. When he raised that smudgy fabric, we automatically stood straight and saluted, our chests puffing out, and more than a few eyes had tears. About once a week the guards would strip us, run us outside and go through our clothing. During one of those shakedowns, they found Mike's flag. We all knew what would happen. That night they came for him. Night interrogations were always the worst. They opened the cell door and pulled Mike out. We could hear the beginning of the torture before they even had him in the torture cell. They beat him most of the night. About daylight they pushed what was left of him back through the cell door. He was badly broken; even his voice was gone. Within two weeks, despite the danger, Mike scrounged another piece of cloth and began another flag. The Stars and Stripes, our national symbol, was worth the sacrifice to him. Now whenever I see the flag, I think of Mike and the morning he first waved that tattered emblem of a nation. It was then, thousands of miles from home in a lonely prison cell, that he showed us what it is to be truly free."

Dear Rich: I'm the author of "Red Scorpion: The War Patrols of the USS Rasher. My dad served in the Rasher during her eight war patrols, but he also served in the S-33 while stationed in Pearl Harbor from 1934 to 1937. He was aboard the S-33 when she returned to the U.S. to be decommission in December 1937. I have a wealth of vintage photos my dad took of the S-33, the sub base, and operations at sea during that period of service. All are great, including the ones of being locked through the Panama Canal. Interestingly, the S-33 bent a port prop shaft while in San Diego, which necessitated rigging a sail for more motive power to reach the Rodman sub base in Panama. I'm not certain, but they may have had it rigged all the way home to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. What a time that must have been! When the war broke out, Dad went back into subs and went aboard the Rasher. Byt the way, the S-33's skipper at that time was Dick Voge, who later went on to be Vice Admiral Lockwood's ComSubPac operations officer. My Dad name is Harold Lundblom nickname SPEC, and no he did not wear glasses. He was on the SS Alexander Macomb which was sunk July 3, 2025 on the Murmansk Run. My Dad died suddenly in 1989, if anyone out there knew him or if anyone could tell me how I go about getting information about his service record. I would appreciate hearing from you. He was part of the gun crew on the Alexander Macomb, and he told my Mom they slept at their guns everynight. I don't know the names of any other ships he was on. Dear Rich, Great site. I enjoyed your description of your boot camp. I was a reservist and had two weeks (boot camp) at Great Lakes and two weeks on a reserve ship I was a two week wonder. I was assigned and then served on the USS Bushnell at Key West Fl. in 1967. Many active duty resrvists were released as a means to save money in late 1968. I only spent 14 months on active duty instead of two years. I finished as a BM3. I was nineteen years old. I miss SN Frank Varisco my best navy friend. He lived in Chicago. Serviced the Harder, Darter, Trigger, Trout, Sennate, and Clamagore, the USS Proteus (AS-19) in Holy Loch (60-61), Scotland servicing the George Washington, Ethen Allen and the Patric Henry. Aloha, I served two tours on USS Swordfish(SSN 579), a more modern S-boat. When I was stationed in San Diego I got to know Larry Julinn, who had been XO of USS Thresher in WWII, he told me of meeting the captain of one of the S-boats at Lockwood Hall (the officer's club at Subase, Pearl Harbor - I don't know what it was called then) and the next morning running into the oil slick where it had sunk just after leaving port. I don't know which boat this was.

I went in the Navy and on the boats, Queenfish SS393, & Blackfin SS322. The Queen was a highly decorated WW2 fleet type, Blackfin was a reffitted guppy snorkel. In high school, a friend's uncle was on the S boats in the late 1920's. When he died his daughter gave me all his scrap books. I'll see if I can find any thing you may be interested in. I was on the Queeenfish '52 to '54, and Blackfin '54 to '56. TM2 SS. I've surfed a lot of Sub web sights, yours is one of the tops, thanks for all the good & exhaustive work. This is one of the most complete webs on S-boats I've seen. However, the synopsis on the USS S-10 (SS115) doesn't tell the entire story as to why this Boat was decommissioned. As a member of it's Crew from 1935 until July 1936, when it was decommissioned in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, I was aboard this Boat when it sank - and was resurfaced by its own crew. This mishap was triggered by the Army's Fort Amador - in the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Its Skipper, at this time was: Lt. Hartwig - Rodney Smith, Exec. - Ltjg. Ford, Eng. Officer. My father (Frank Eldon Durant) served as an EM on the S-36 and was on her when she ran aground. He was the last one on the sub as the captain asked him to go back in and retrive the log book which he did, but while back in the sub he also retrieved his own Bible. I remember many stories about the escape and the subsequent rescue by the Dutch Freighter. They all thought they would be captured by the Japanese and the Dutchmen were a welcome sight. Escape accross the island on a narrow gage railroad followed when the Japanese began to bomb. He served on several other submarines with no return stateside until his discharge in 1945. After the war dad became a missionary and served in several countries in South America. He departed this life and entered the next on March 22, 1997. Thanks for the information and renewed memories.

A wonderful site! I have just discovered it. I was QM3 on the USS S-48 from Sept. '44 till the decomissioning after the war. I made every single scary dive during that period, and believe me they were scary. I had many shipmates on other S-Boats including S-47 and S-35 and S-36. I served later on the USS Diodon (SS349). I have been asked this question more than a few times, so I will post the answer here in the logbook. It is also on the bio page of "The Poop Deck." Before I tell you a little about me, let me explain the reason and the meaning behind PooP Deck. The term "poop deck" refers to the partial deck above the ship's main afterdeck at the stern of the ship. In the days before indoor plumbing, a structure was rigged aft of this deck over the sea for the purpose of relieving oneself. When a ship takes a wave over the stern of a ship it is said to be "pooped." For the purpose of these pages, "poop" means having the inside information. I'm not sure where that particular term originated, possibly the poop deck was also a place to exchange information. If anyone has the straight "poop" on the origin of that last definition, please let me know. Sincerely, Rich T.

My kids enjoyed your answer and shared them with some fellow students at their high school. I have two daughters (twins) that graduate next month. I have been in communications myself. Amateur radio for 35 years. Excellent job. I've been a military history fan(WWII especially) so I always enjoy stuff like this. There were more than a few things about the weapons systems and such on those old boats I had no idea of. I'd heard about the problems they had with breakdowns constantly and miserable living conditions(even by the standard of that day). Given all that it's remarkable that only one of those boats was actually lost in combat. Good luck and good sailors had to have been the difference. Keep up the good work!

I am a Plank Owner of the U.S.S. THRESHER SSN-593 served and sailed aboard her from 27 June 60 to 9 July 62. Your site is great, Chief, I have marked it in my Favorites list and will return often. The Thresher was my 1st"Boat" and I earned mu Dolphins aboard her. I see in the Log Book that someone is hunting for James Sweet. Jim and I were best buddies. We were in the same underway section in which he was the Electric Plant Operator & I was the Reactor Operator. We spent many hours sitting alongside each other in the Maneuvering Room. I completed a 21 year Naval career & retired on 1 Sept. 79. I was 1 of the 1st to retire whose entire career was spent on Nuclear Submarines & prototypes. I'm looking to make contact with any other ex-shipmates from the Thresher that are out there.

This is Fantastic!! Love your site. Notice the (SW), but in my defense, I did ride the USS Alexandria (SSN-757) for a short spell. I've been looking for old shipmates, spent my time on the USS Lockwood (FF-1064), USS Parsons (DDG-33), USS John A Moore (FFG-19), USS Pluck (MSO-464), USS Vreeland (FF-1068), COMDESRON 14 and retired from Nctams Eurcent Det London in July 98.
