Ron Martini (Served 1960-1968)
USS Catfish (SS-339) (Qual Boat), USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599B), USS Patrick Henry (SSBN 599G) Ron Martini's Submarine World Network, USSVI Webmaster, EMailI Was born 6 months and one day before Pearl Harbor day in '41' right here in beautiful little (15,000) Sheridan, Wyoming. I joined the Navy in March 1960 - Boot Camp in San Diego - Company 145. I joined with a cousin and 2 other guys from here. EM'A' School in San Diego. Headed for SubSchool that winter and contacted pneumonia on Greyhound. I remember sitting on a hot water radiator at the Greyhound bus depot on Bank St. and freezing to death. Got set back, as they wouldn't let me do pressure and escape tank training with lungs.
I then received orders to USS Catfish (SS-339) in San Diego. Arrived with tonsillitis! 9 months later they threw me over the side for qualifying. Missed Westpac trip. I next received orders to Nuc Pow School at Mare Is. Good times. I spent 6 months there, then got orders to A1W in Idaho. Could drive home in 8 hours. Orders for USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599B) at Groton/Holy Loch. Did 7 patrols and brought boat back to EB for new missiles and core change in early 65.
I came home and married a home town gal. Orders then to B School in Great Lakes. Made E-5. Lived in Zion, Ill. I received orders to the Grayling in Portsmouth! What! Yep. Only problem was the Grayling was being built in Newport News, two weeks later, they fessed up to the error so they transferred me to USS Patrick Henry 599G. Made E-6 at B school also. 6 patrols later and it was "out the gate in 68"!
Started in grocery business one week after getting out and exited that company and that work 28 years and 9 months later! Retired March 97 after I discovered the company stock had done so well, that I could get out and pay off the house. Haven't regretted that for one minute. Currently turning close to 57 years old, excellent health, no bills, new golf clubs, 4X4 Toy PU(my 2nd love), 300 submarine books.
Have two children and 4 grandchildren. You should see the 3.5 year old grandson on his dads computer! Types in passwords, total control of mouse and only takes one try and he remembers what to do.
I have had several hobbies over the years. Ham radio started in 76 and still have license (N7BMR). Photography did from 82-86 then computers hit the house. Started a computer club and at one time had over 300 members in the largest computer group between Twin Cities and Seattle! It folded as most couldn't make the move to 3 1/2" discs and Windows. I still get calls from people asking about the location of our 2000 disk 5 1/4" disc library. LOL.
Internet came to Sheridan in 94. I jumped aboard and wrote my first page on submarines. Now-30 pages later (currently working on 3 more). I am a member of USSVI, Treasurer of Internet Base USSVI, Cyberspace Base USSVI, Naval Submarine League, Navy League, Naval Institute, Webmaster for ussvi.org page, member St. Mary's Submarine Museum Association, and Sharkhunter. In closing: I hope to meet some of you. I live where I-25 runs out and where it meets I-90. If you are going to Yellowstone Park and are coming from the east, you better stop and call. If you are going to the Black Hills/Mt Rushmore and live in the West, you better stop and call. I have only ever met Denny Doyle in Denver who is a very infrequent poster here and John Clear some 30+ years ago.
