Aunt Carrie's Family Restaurant - Point Judith, RI (Circa
1960)
Aunt Carrie's Restaurant was only open during the summer season. The restaurant is what is known in Rhode Island as a Clam Shack and is a favorite of both tourists and locals. It was certainly one of our family's favorite places during the late 50's and early 60's. The prices were very reasonable and the food was very good. I can still remember the taste of their excellent clam chowder (both New England and Manhattan varieties) and there was absolutely nothing that compared to the taste of the hot and succulent clam cakes served up at Aunt Carrie's. Tradition has it, that Clam Cakes originated at Aunt Carrie's; I don't know if this is true or not, but they have been serving them since before my time. The fried clams and steamers are also top of the line. The restaurant is located very near the old Point Judith Lighthouse and Coastguard Station at the end of Ocean Road and had a small dining room as well as takeout service. (They also had picnic tables for outside dining.) Aunt Carrie's is still going strong and is still one of Rhode Island's favorite Clam Shacks. See Also: Postcard
