The Hygeia Hotel - New Shorham, Block Island, RI - 1907 The Hygeia House was originally built in 1883. In addition to serving as a hotel it was also the home and office of the owner Dr. John C. Champlin. (At the time he was Block Island's only physician. The hotel was abandoned many years ago and suffered years of neglect. Champlin Starr, the great grandson of Dr. Champlin purchased and restored the old hotel in 1999. Current room rates range from $50 to $315. Note: After looking at a photo of the New Hygeia, I would have to say it was completely either rebuilt, not restored (See Photo on Hygeia Website) or there were two different Hygeia's on the island. The old Hygeia in this picture is quite a bit larger than the restored Hygeia House. (Or Possibly the Post Card Manufacturer got the name wrong.)
