The contract for the USS Virginia (SSN-774), the lead ship in a new class of submarines originally called New SSN (NSSN) was awarded to the Electric Boat Company in Groton Connecticut on September 30, 1998. She was named USS Virginia the following day and her keel was laid down on September 2, 1999. Virginia was sponsored by Lynda Johnson Robb and launched on August 16, 2003. Lynda Johnson Robb is the daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson and "Lady Bird" Johnson. She is the wife of former U. S. Senator Charles S. Robb of Virginia. The USS Virginia was over 90 percent complete at the time of her launch and when commissioned sometime in 2004; she will bring to the fleet new technologies and innovations in design, construction and mission capability.
