100th Anniversary Submarine Service
The first day ceremony for the Prestige Booklet honoring 100 years of the United States Submarine Service was held at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut on March 27, 2000. The presiding officer for the ceremony was Jo Saunders, Connecticut District Manager for the United States Postal Service. Speakers included Andy Feindt - Connecticut State Commander Submarine Veterans of World War II, Vice Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani, Jr. - Commander Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet, Senator Joseph Lieberman and Senator Christopher Dodd. Musical background was provided by the Northeast Navy Band and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by 5th grade students from 4 different Connecticut schools. A "Tolling of the Bell" Ceremony was conducted to honor the 58 lost boats. The Bell is rung twice for each submarine on "Eternal Patrol." The stamps were designed by Carl Herrman and illustrated by Jim Griffiths. There are five different stamp designs each illustrating a different era of Submarine history. Beginning with the 60 cent issue - The USS Holland was the Navy's first submersible. The 22 cent design depicts an S Class boat - Built at the end of World War I, they saw service through World War II. The $3.20 issue depicts the Gato Class - The workhorse of the 2nd World War. The 33 cent issue depicts the Los Angeles Class and was issued as both a booklet and sheet stamp. The 55 cent issue illustrates an Ohio Class Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine, a vital part of our Strategic Nuclear Deterrent Force. The Program itself, which includes a first day cancellation of all five booklet stamps, is one of the best designed First Day programs, I have seen in a long time and provided below are mini-scans with links to full size images of the front, back and inside portions of the program.
