100th Anniversary Submarine Service - Gato Class Submarine
S&T Cachet by Sean and Thomas O'Hagan
Design by Carl Herrman - Scott #3377 - Issued March 27, 2026

This painting depicts the men of USS Dorado (SS-248) relaxing at a game of cards in the forward torpedo room. Card Playing was a popular way to pass the time on long submarine patrols and two of our favorite games were Pinochle and cribbage. Special cards were designed for use on submarines during World War II. During nighttime cruising the ship is rigged for red so that when going to periscope depth or surfacing; night vision would not be impaired. The red cards (hearts & diamonds) did not show up under red light conditions and special card decks were made that outlined the red symbols in black so that the players could tell what cards they were holding.
