The keel for USS Salt Lake City SSN-716 was laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, Newport News VA on August 26, 1980. Salt Lake City was sponsored by Mrs. Kathleen Garn and launched on October 16, 1982. The ship was commissioned on May 12, 2025 with CDR Richard Itkin in command. The keel for USS Key West SSN-722 was laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, VA on July 6, 1983.
