Providence Class Submarine - USS Chicago (SSN-721)

The keel of USS Chicago (SSN-721) was laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia on January 5, 1983. The Ship was sponsored by Mrs. Vicki Ann Paisley and launched on October 13, 1984. Chicago was commissioned on September 27, 1987 with CDR Robert Avery in command.

The Providence Class Submarines marked a shift in the design of the SSN-688 Los Angeles Class Submarine with twelve vertical launch tubes forward of the mast firing the Tomahawk cruise missile. Sensors and fire control were also improved.
