USS Florida
(SSBN/SSGN-728)

The USS Florida (SSBN/SSGN-728) was authorized by Congress in 1975 and her keel was laid down by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut on May 6, 1977. The ship was sponsored by Mrs. Jarcia M. Carlucci and launched on November 14, 1981. Florida was commissioned on June 18 1983 with Captain G. R. Stemer (Gold) and Captain William L. Powell (Blue) in command. 

As originally designed the USS Florida was 560 feet in overall length with a beam of 42 feet and a draft of 36.5 feet. The ship had 24 tubes for launching Trident Missiles and 4 torpedo tubes for the Mark 48 torpedo. SSBNs have two crews (Blue and Gold). Each crew consists of  17 officers, 15 Chief Petty Officers and 122 Enlisted men.

USS Florida is currently undergoing conversion at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as the Navy's first SSGN. When conversion is completed in April 2006, the submarine will have the capability of launching up to 154 Tomahawk Missiles. In addition, the ship's living spaces will be expanded to accommodate approximately 60 Navy Seal Team members. Another planned upgrade will allow Florida to deploy unmanned aerial and sea vehicles through the torpedo and missile tubes. The conversion from SSBN to SSGN is planned for three additional SSBNs.
