Washington
and the bible that was used for his Masonic Oath |
President George Washington
visited Newport on August 17, 1790 and was
presented with a letter from Moses Seixas, the
President of the Touro Congregation, extolling the new
government, "which
to bigotry gives no sanction, to persecution no assistance."
Washington repeated this phrase in his reply and it has been
credited to him ever since. |
