Rhode Island DPOs (Dead Post Offices)
Watchemoket Town Cancel 1875
Sent to Lyman Klapp Esquire in Providence
The Watchemoket Post Office was discontinued in 1879

Watchemoket has been incorporated into the town of East Providence. The first reference to the town of Watchemoket appears in the annals concerning Roger Williams and the settling of Rhode Island in 1636. "Permission was given by the Narragansetts for Williams to settle at Woonasquatucket which was two miles east of the Indian town of Watchemoket."

Watchemoket Cove is one of the favorite places for Providence bird watchers to gather. The cove can be seen in the map to the left, located just below the Veterans Memorial Parkway. 55 different species of birds have been identified in the cove by local bird watchers.

The Squantum Association, which provides a private fine dining experience is located just to the west of  Squantum Woods State Park on Squantum Cove.
