The Cover above is most likely philatelic in nature and does not contain a return address. It is addressed to J. B. Lawlor in Providence, Rhode island and dated September 22, 1939. It is franked with two overprinted in black 1/2 cent Franklins, (Red-Orange - Scott #118 -- US #403) issued on September 1, 1939 and the 1, 2 and 3-cent Panama Canal 25th Anniversary issue, (Scott #s 120, 121, and 122) issued on August 15, 1939. The scenes depicted are, "Balboa Before," "Balboa After" and "Gaillard Cut Before." The Colors respectively are: yellow-green, rose-carmine and purple. The stamps are tied by two oval Balboa Heights cancels and one Balboa Heights Circular Date Stamp, (CDS).

The 1930 Providence Census lists a John Lawlor as born in 1907 and living with his mother. It lists his occupation as Jewelry Manufacturer. The family origin is listed as Irish Free State.
