The cover above was sent on official War
Department stationary with the Official
Business crossed out. It is from Private
First Class C. M. Whaley who was stationed at the Army
Hospital, Fort William D. Davis in the Panama
Canal Zone. He was probably in C
Company, but the last part of the address is covered by the
stamps. The letter is addressed to his mother Mrs.
Henry C. Whaley in Narragansett,
Rhode Island.
The letter was sent "Via Air
Mail" and is franked with four red-violet
3-Cent "Major General George
Washington Goethals" issues,
(Scott #117 issued on August 15, 1934)
and three yellow-green 1-Cent "Balboa
Before" stamps
from the "25th Anniversary of the Panama Canal"
issue, (Scott #120 issued on August 15, 1939).
The stamps are tied to the cover by three overlaid Panama
Canal Circular Date Stamps, (CDS)
and one duplex cancel.
The South Kingston Census of
1930 lists Clifford
M. Whaley as being born
in 1920. It lists his father as Henry
Clifford Whaley (born 1889)
and his mother as Isabelle E. Whaley
(born 1890).
