Rhode Island Picture Post Cards
Rhode Island State Lobster Rearing Station
Wickford, Rhode Island - 1949
(Scroll Down for History and Background Information)

The Postcard  was sent on August 9, 1949 to Mr. C. Nicolich in Union City, New Jersey. The message is in Italian; maybe one of my visitors can tell me what it says.

The Wickford Lobster Hatchery began operation in 1898 and remained in operation until 1949/50. There are currently no lobster hatcheries operating in Rhode Island, however Professor J. Stanley Cobb of the University of Rhode Island, (URI) began  a project in 1996 to enhance lobster stocks in Narragansett Bay by providing shelters using artificial reefs.

Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts still maintains a Lobster Hatchery established in 1949 which is open to visitors.
