West Island & Sakonnet Light - Sakonnet, RI - 1912
(Scroll Down for the message text and Information about Centerville Mill)

The post card is addressed to Miss Clara Young in Connecticut. (I was unable to make out the town name.) It was posted at Sakonnet, RI on July 22, 1912. The text message reads:
"I am on a sail this P.M. May"

Construction began on the Sakonnet Point Lighthouse in 1883 and was completed in 1884. The Lighthouse is located on Little Cormorant Rock about 800 yards off Sakonnet Point. The lighthouse was battered during the hurricane of 1938 and again by Hurricane Carol in 1954 causing the base of the light to crack on both occasions. The light was deactivated in 1955, but was maintained unlighted by the town of Little Compton.

The lighthouse was restored by the "Friends of Sakonnet Point Lighthouse" and relighted on March 19, 1997.

Location - Sakonnet Lighthouse
