The Post Office at East Greenwich,
(East Greenwich Township, Kent County), Rhode Island
was established prior to 1792. The first official
records date from July 31, 1792. Gideon Mumford was
the first Postmaster and this Post Office is currently in
operation under Postmaster John P. Rachlow appointed on
March 1, 1997.
NOTE:
There is a G. Mumford listed in Ben Franklin's ledger as handling the financial
accounts for a post office located in Greenwich, Rhode Island from 1776 to
1778, however no other references could be found of any post office located in
Greenwich, so it is unclear if this post office has any relation to the East
Greenwich Post Office.
East Greenwich is the home to the
Varnum Continentals, A Revolutionary War Reenactment Group.
