The Post Office at
Greeneville,
(Smithfield Township, Providence County),
Rhode Island
was established on March 12, 1823.
The first Postmaster
was Richard Smith. The
current Postmaster is Michael C. Anderson appointed
on April 16, 2005. The Post Office is located at 1 Austin Avenue.
Richard Smith
was born on May 15, 1796
in Smithfield Township.
He died
in Providence
on August 28, 1864.
Richard was descended
from John Smith
one of the original proprietors
with Roger Williams of the Providence Plantations and
Alice Comstock.
John Smith was born in
Rochdale, Lancastershire, England in
1595 and
died in
Providence in
1648.
He was a miller
by trade and was one of the original
5
companions
of Roger Williams.
In 1646
he was granted land to build a town mill,
which he set up on the Moshassuck River,
(which joins the Providence River at Memorial Blvd and Kennedy Plaza).
I also noted that Richard's
Great Grandparents;
Daniel Smith
and Mary Smith
were 3rd Cousins.
