The Newport Naval Education Training Center Station (NETC) was opened in 1974 and is currently in operation.

Newport has been a home to the United States Navy since early statehood and although much reduced, continues to host Naval units and activities to this day. The Training Center, The Naval War College, a Naval hospital and reserve ships call the town home.
