The Redwood Library & Athenaeum is the oldest lending library in the United States. The library was Founded in 1747 and designed by Peter Harrison. Construction was completed in 1750. It was the first community library building in the American Colonies.

The Redwood Library is an independent subscription library. It is supported by membership fees, endowments, and gifts. The library provides  books, lectures, exhibitions, displays of fine and decorative arts, performances, seminars, and other educational activities for members and the public.

The library contains over 160,000 volumes, archives and manuscripts as well as an important collection of fine and decorative arts.
