First Postal Stationary Item Issued in U.S.

This is a nice example of the first Postal Stationary item issued in the United States. It is Scott #U1 on white diagonally laid paper. The paper is watermarked POD-US as illustrated to the left. This postal stationary item was issued from 1853 to 1855. There is a gap between this issue and the next postal stationary issue of 5 years. (They were issued in 1860). This cover was mailed from Newport, Rhode Island  in January of 1854 to Mr. Charles Hunter in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
