The first Warwick Post Office,
(Warwick Township, Kent
County) was established
on December 17, 1824 under Postmaster
Samuel Green. The Warwick Neck Post Office
was established on October 27, 1851 under
Postmaster George A Willard. The first Warwick Post
Office was renamed the
Apponaug Post Office on
October 29, 1879 while the
Warwick Neck
Post Office continued to operate until May 18,
1881 when it's name was changed to Warwick
(2nd Warwick Post Office).
On March 1, 1938 the Warwick Post Office's
(2nd Warwick)
name was changed to Warwick
Neck once again. The
Warwick Neck Post Office was disestablished
for the last time on June 30, 1949 and the
Apponaug
Post Office's name was changed back to Warwick
(1st Warwick).
The First Warwick Post
Office was originally
known as the Fulling Mills
Post Office which was
established on February 22, 1811 under
Postmaster Benjamin Greene. The name was changed to
Warwick (1st
Warwick) on
December 17, 1824. Fulling Mills cancels are known
only in manuscript.
The Warwick Post Office
(1st)
is in operation today under Postmaster Gary A. Neirinckx
appointed on May 15, 2004 and handles
the mail for the former Warwick Neck
(2nd Warwick)
Post Office.
If this is a bit confusing,
(it is to me)
to simplify - The cover above was canceled by the 2nd,
(former Warwick Neck)
Warwick Post Office in 1936 and the cover for the
"Settling of Rhode Island Postal
Card" was canceled by the
1st (Current)
Warwick Post Office in 1986.
In 1936, the 1st Warwick Post
Office was still known as the Apponaug Post
Office.
