The town of
Seekonk, Massachusetts
was incorporated in 1812. At this time the Rhode Island towns
of Pawtucket
and East Providence
were part of Massachusetts and
East Providence
was originally part of the town of
Seekonk,
making up the major portion of its industrial area. In 1862,
East Providence was incorporated into the state of Rhode
Island and took with it over half the town's territory and
more than two thirds of its population.
