The Bristol Ferry Post Office, (Portsmouth Township, Newport County) was established on March 9, 1883. under Postmaster Wilbur C. Wheeler. The post office was disestablished on September 30, 1964 and became the Bristol Ferry Rural Station of Portsmouth, which was closed on May 31, 1976.

Wilbur C. Wheeler was born in Massachusetts in 1855. He was married to Laura Wheeler and they had two daughters; Harriet and Lillian. He is listed as a telegraph operator on the 1910 Portsmouth Census.
