The Rice City Post Office, (Coventry Township, Kent County) was established on March 6, 1828 under Postmaster Benjamin Rider, Jr. The post office was disestablished on November 30, 1868 and mail is handled by the Greene, RI Post Office. Rice City cancels are known only in manuscript and are very rare.

 

Rice City is a rural Village in the northwestern part of Coventry Township. The historical centerpiece of the village is the old Rice Tavern built in 1796 by Samuel Rice. The tavern was an overnight stop for the Providence, RI to Norwich, Connecticut stagecoach. In 1866 the tavern was converted into a private residence by Dr. P. K. Hutchinson.
