to Pawtucket, Rhode Island

Anuradhapura was first settled during the 6th century BC. King Pandukabhaya made it his capitol in 377 BC. The city was named after Anuradha, who was the fist general of King Vijaya, (the legendary ancestor of the Sinhalese). Anuradhapura was the political and religious capital of Sri Lanka for over 1300 years. It was finally abandoned in 1017 AD after numerous invasions by the Chola (A South Indian/Tamil Dynasty) and was overgrown with Jungle for many years.
